It's 2:31 AM. The Democratic Party is sleeping peacefully when it hears its phone buzz on the night stand. It rolls over and sees "Hillary" on the caller ID. It pauses briefly, considering pushing "END" and not dealing with this shit tonight. The thought is appealing but the Democratic Party knows that if it doesn't take this call, another one is only minutes away.

Pretty freakin' hilarious, and I have to say very accurate about how many people (including me) feel about Hillary Clinton. I won't go into it in much detail, because my geek-crush Wil Wheaton did all the work for me:

It's over. She knows it's over. It's been over for almost three months, but she's been moving the goalposts and cynically and cravenly pandering to voters in a way that's not only insulting, but is embarrassing. John Cole frequently says that he can't believe he ever supported Bush, and I can now join him in saying that I can't believe I ever supported, defended and believed in the Clintons.

I don't agree with him on all points, as I know some genuine Hillary supporters and I definitely don't think that she has been able to maintain her support solely through Republicans voting in Democrat primaries. Nonetheless, I really wish Hillary would go away. Please stop calling me in the middle of the night Hillary. Its over, really.

moleskin art

I've really been wanting a moleskin notebook lately. I don't draw much, but I'd really like something to jot down notes in. Bonus if it had an integrated pen holder (I tend to lose a lot of pens). I've been inspired by two sites:

As the title implies, its a site with art from people's moleskins. For the uninformed, moleskins come in a wide range of types, including ones with watercolor pages. So some of the art in these books is pretty intense. It doesn't hurt that one of my favorite webcomic artist has some good entries: Hawk from Apple Geeks.

Great intro to Moleskins, really imparts the fervor of the addicted. I've wanted one of these for a while but this is the site that really made me start thinking seriously about it.

cycling vindicated

Great article by Dave Moulton exposing the realities behind saying that cars are safer than bikes per mile (which is true).

However, this statistic is flawed to the point that it can be ignored, for the simple reason it would take a cyclist riding slightly under 385 miles per week, 50 years to ride one million miles.

Most of us will never come close to that kind of cycling mileage; 500,000 miles in a lifetime would be very good. Compare this to driving, and we all know how relatively easy it is to put 100,000 miles on our car speedometer, two million miles in an automobile in a lifetime is not unreasonable.

I've had a couple friends point this out to me, usually after I've been a little too self righteous about bike riding. Most people express concern for my well being when I tell them that I ride a bike in LA, but I think being in a car is far more dangerous. Especially if you consider that the amount of cycling deaths would go down if more people rode bicycles instead of cars.

In any case, it is nice to feel vindicated, at least a little bit. While this may not sway anybody over to riding a bike, I can at least feel a little more smug riding my bike everyday.

writing prompts

Ok, I can't take looking up writing prompts anymore. They're just so... cheesy! Don't I have anything to say for myself? Writing shouldn't be this hard.

I've never been good at self expression though. Anyone who has ever talked to me on the phone about my day knows that. The only time when I become good at telling stories is when I'm in a social situation and usually a little lubed up.

So... one story a day? Even if I have to get inebriated to do it?

Gigabytes and Megabytes

I remember a time when a 640mb hard drive was a respectable size. This was just before the advent of easy to use CD Ripping software.

Now, as hard drive sizes continue to follow Moore's Law, I began to dream of a day when we'd have hard drives so big that we wouldn't even have to worry about space anymore. of course, I'm coming to the realization I was wrong. I just recently installed a 500 GB hard drive on my computer, bringing me up to a total storage space of 830 GB. I just checked my available space and somehow I've already filled up 415 GB, and I've only just begun ripping all my back logged movies onto my drive. Its pretty obvious I'm going to need a new drive soon. I should probably just opt for a terabyte drive.

Anyway, I think that we are reaching a critical mass for movie ripping software and the moment the movie industry's been dreading, when DVDs are as easy to rip as CDs is coming quickly.

So go out and buy a new hard drive because the revolution WILL be ripped!

computer fix-it

Oh man, so I finally have my home computer 90% up and running. Despite having all my stuff at my new place, I didn't realize how odd it felt not having my computer until last night. Now I finally feel like this place is my home.

But having a home computer again means new projects! I got the first one set up this morning. A Los Angeles based cycling team, involved in many projects both race and advocacy related. Check it out: BikeSwarm!

A couple other projects on the plate, I'll post about them as I work through them.

Weekend

Man, I never know what to do with myself on weekends anymore. I had to work this weekend but since I live so much closer now, it was no big deal (unlike the sojourns that I used to result from weekend shifts).

Sunday was super relaxing. I just spent the day listening to music, reading, laundry, and cleaning up the apartment. My room is still a disaster but its inching closer to organization.

the art of style

I feel kind of bad, using one of the pre made templates for this blog. I don't think I've ever really had a blog (besides my ill-used livejournal) that I used a template.

Of course, I've also had blogs that had more redesigns than actual posts, which is the reason I am going to stick to this pre made design for a bit. Perhaps I will actually work on my writing style and content rather than futzing about with the look. Though I'm sure that will come eventually.

It is weird though, seeing my words in someone else's template. I've always looked down my nose at people who used 3rd party templates (though I realize this is an ill-considered prejudice). Perhaps my means of self expression have been visual for so long that someone else's design around my words feels alien.
